The Art of Reflection

Venus.jpg

This week we went to the Triennial Exhibition currently on display at the National Gallery of Victoria. One of the art works is Jeff’s Koon’s Venus (pictured). It is a classical art subject but this one is made of stainless steel. It is polished like a mirror so when you look at this work you see not only what the artist has created but you see reflections that you and other people bring.

Jeff Koon wants viewers to see that reflecting on art is both an inward and an outer process.

It got me thinking that, when we reflect on art or nature or Scripture, there is an external focus but also, we bring to it our internal world. This interactive, reflective process can be rich and evocative. It’s not just about the artist’s work and creativity but the thoughts we bring from our situation, at a particular time, that may be of immense value to us and enriching to others.
