Community Glue

The North & West Melbourne News is quite a local institution. It has been running for the last 42 years. It is a quarterly newspaper that is produced by volunteers at The Centre, with Maurice Gaul serving as editor and Anne Burgi overseeing the layout. A loyal team delivers 6,500 copies to all residents in North and West Melbourne. Anyone can pick up a copy or two on the rack outside The Centre, at 58 Errol Street, North Melbourne.

A Mirror and Thermometer

The North & West Melbourne News provides a useful mirror that reflects what is going in our local community. The newspaper is also a thermometer that indicates the degree of spirit there is in North and West Melbourne. If you think our community has been flattened completely by the pandemic, read the Spring edition of the News. According to the editor, Maurice Gaul, “there’s never been a bigger edition of the News.” It is an amazing feat to produce a newspaper under lockdown but in addition to a four-page City Council election lift out and The Centre’s Annual Report, there are 20 pages of stories about people and goings-on in the local community during COVID-19.
