Spaces and Places from Egypt
Recollecting walking the streets of Cairo, I remember the noisy music of the people, cars, motorcycles, donkeys, the market, the music and the songs of Om Kulsum on the radio.
I vividly remember the calls to prayer and the Allah-hu Akbar of 1000 mosques in unison bringing Muslims to prayer five times daily.
I remember all these sounds as the daily opera of Egyptians living in Cairo the busy capital, the place which I too have called home for most of my life.
When I came to Australia It felt as if I had lost my hearing in the very organised silence of daily life in Melbourne suburbs. Maybe this is a new type of music for me named silence.
